At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, August 14...

1819: Boston merchant Samuel Cabot reports, "My attention was suddenly arrested by an object emerging from the water at the distance of about one hundred or one hundred and fifty yards, which gave to my mind at the first glance the idea of a horse's head…I perceived at a short distance eight or ten regular bunches or protuberances, and at a short interval three or four more…The Head…was serpent shaped; it was elevated about two feet from the water…He could not be less than eighty feet long."

1910: "Ottawa Prophet" Ezekiel Stone Wiggins, a Canadian weather and earthquake predictor, dies in Britannia, Ottawa. Among other Fortean interests, he theorized that a relict plesiosaurus inhabited Rice Lake.

2007: Illinois Bigfoot researcher Danne "SquatchCommando" Buchanan dies at age 41, after being struck by a car while walking along Boden Road, near Noblesville, Indiana.

2008: Bigfoot Researcher Tim Cullen from a heart attack at age 43, in Panama City, Florida.
