At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, August 11...

1805: According to Charles Fort, "Upon August 11, 1805, an explosive sound was heard at East Haddam, Connecticut. There are records of six prior sounds, as if of explosions, that were heard at East Haddam, beginning with the year 1791, but, unrecorded, the sounds had attracted attention for a century, and had been called the 'Moodus' sounds, by the Indians." Today, science explains the sounds as small, shallow earthquakes.

August 11: A witness named Toupin reports a mermaid sighting at Exmouth, in Devon, England. He claims the creature sang "wild melodies" similar to sound to "an Aeolian harp."

1994: Horror/sci-fi film star Peter Cushing dies in Canterbury, Kent, at age 81.
