You may have noticed that yesterday and today there have been no new articles on this blog.
This is because I was rushed to hospital yesterday with a suspected heart attack.
Happily, it turned about to be gallstones. When I say happily, I don't mean they are a barrel of laughs either, but they are not so serious.
I hope to resume articles in the next day or two.
Ye editor.

ST STEPHEN'S DAY
Today, 26th December, is St Stephen's Day in the Western Church. In the Eastern Church the feast is on 27th December. It celebrates the feast of St Stephen, the first recorded martyr, who was stoned to death.
As far as animals go, today is connected in Ireland with the wren. In days gone by, the wren was hunted by gangs of boys and killed. In these gentler times, no killing takes place. The practice may date back to pagan times and the wren may have been a sacrifice. Hunting the wren was also carried out in Wales, but, as far as I know, the practice has fallen into desuetude in that country.
The link below deals with the wren's possible connection to Indo-European mythology.

LAUGHING OWL
The Laughing Owl is thought to be extinct. However, there have been reports which mean it may still be out there. There have been a number of possible sightings and fragments of eggshell have also been discovered. In 1985 certain Americans heard what could be its cries.
