At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

TODAY IN WEIRD



On This Day in Weird, February 3...

1976: Japanese whalers recover a whole giant squid from a sperm whale's stomach at 36°44′N 141°33′E in the Northwest Pacific. Its mantle measures 23⅓ inches. No other measurements are recorded.

1977: Witnesses at Tasmania's Seven Mile Beach sight a dome-shaped UFO with a slender, big-headed passenger inside it.

1980: Pauline Markham watches a Sasquatch walk down a ridge near South Weber, Utah.

2013: Fishermen on South Bay, near Kaikoura, New Zealand, report a dead giant squid floating on the surface. They estimate its length at 21 to 26 feet, its weight between 300 and 330 pounds.
