At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

STRANGE NAMES IN AMERICA

Ye Editor has always had an interest in strange or outlandish given names and has picked up a small list of some of those currently in the United States.  With each one is listed the number of bearers, but in each case the number is approximate.

Zog 7; this is actually a perfectly normal name in Albania and, indeed, the last king of Albania was King Zog, who was overthrown by Mussolini before World War II.  It means a bird.

Hitler 57; in Germany at present they won't name their sons Adolf, let alone Hitler.  It is consequently surprising to find so many Hitlers in  the United States.

Galadriel 130; it is hardly surprising to find a Tolkien name.

Kangaroo 6

Krypton 8

Jumbo 25; an unfortunate name if the bearer should be overweight.  I can imagine it would lead to name calling in the schoolyard.

Typhoon 4

Blackbeard 1; yo-ho!

Blackbeard (Edward Teach)
