In Ireland there is a lake called Lough Melvin, which contains three species of trout. Each is unique and confined to this body of water. They are the Gillaroo. the Sonaghan and the Ferox. The lake is of modest proportions, yet they rarely crossbreed. It is thought they have been resident there since the Ice Age.
The scientific names of these species, which have no counterpart anywhere else in the world. are respectively Salmo stomachius, Salmo nigripanis and Salmo ferox.
