At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, October 9...

1954: A hectic evening for UFOs in France. At 6:30 p.m., witness Gilbert Calda and two other children are roller-skating in Pournoy-la-Chétive when a shiny, round craft lands nearby and a 4-foot-tall being with large eyes, wearing a dark jumpsuit, emerges. The thing makes "unintelligible sounds," whereupon the children flee. Thirty minutes later, at Lavoux, Roger Barrault is bicycling when he meets a humanoid creature 4½ feet tall, wearing a "diver's suit" with two lights on its chest. Through the helmet's faceplate Barrault notes "bright eyes" before pedaling off to escape. He sees no UFO but assumes the entity is an alien.
