At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, April 25...

1973: The "Enfield Horror" begins in White County, Illinois, as witness Henry McDaniel of Enfield reports a bizarre monster scratched on his door overnight. According to McDaniel, "It had three legs on it, as short body, two little short arms coming out of its breast area and two pink eyes as big as flashlights. It stood four and a half to five feet tall and was grayish-colored. It was trying to get into the house." Sheriff Roy Poshard Jr. initially threatens to jail McDaniel for spreading tall tales, then relents as further sightings of the creature persist through early May. State troopers find tracks on one occasion, describing them as "like those of a dog, except they had six toe pads." After its spate of frightening appearance, the "horror" vanished forever.
