On This Day in Weird, March 12...
1870: Idaho's Silver City Avalanche newspaper reports
that sometime during February, hunters shot and killed a carnivorous mammal of
unknown species near town. Nicknamed "the man-eater," it weighed
about 100 pounds, had short legs and ears, with large feet and a bushy tail 10
inches long. No overall measurement was reported, nor did the paper explain its
grisly sobriquet. Today, the former boomtown listed as a ghost town, although
certain small businesses remain.
