On This Day in Weird, February 4...
1940: Future filmmaker George Andrew Romero is born in the
Bronx, New York City. In 1968 his black-and-white horror film, Night of the
Living Dead, reintroduces audiences to zombies after a long hiatus in
Hollywood. That film, its sequels, remakes, imitators and parodies spawn an obsession
with the walking dead in all aspects of popular entertainment, continuing to
the present day.
