At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

VEGETABLE MAN

West Virginia is well-known for its anomalies.  John Keel felt it was a "window area" into which transdimensional creatures might be expected to wander.  This particular creature was reportedly seen there in 1968 and it is one that may be labeled outstandingly weird.

In that year one Jennings Frederick was out in the woods.  He became aware of a peculiar sound.  Then he saw the creature: it looked like the stalk of a plant with eyes, long ears and thin arms and legs.  On the end of each arm there were three fingers with suckers at their tips.  This creature somehow intimated to Frederick that it mewant no harm, but it required medical help.  It extended its arms so that the suckers drew blood out of his flesh.  It used an hypnotic technique to stop his feeling pain.  After about a minute the creature fled and Frederick felt some pain.  As he wended his way back home, Frederick heard a humming sound, which he suspected was some conveyance in which the creature was taking off.
