At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

THE LOST VALLEY

Chariton Batchmatchnik was in prison, which he did not find congenial, so he decided to escape.  This was in 19th Century Russia and his endeavor was successful.  He fled the authorities and ended up in the United States, where he gave an interview to the New York World in 1873.

His story was extraordinary and how much belief it should be accorded I leave up to you, Gentle Reader.  He claimed to have come to a Lost Valley.  This contained a lake which harbored a large reptilian beast which he dubbed a saurophidian.  He estimated its length at 30'.  It was scaly and had formidable teeth.  The valley was also inhabited by Mammoths.  He claimed to have seen a combat between the beasts on one occasion.

What are we to make of this?  Newspaper hoax?  Traveler's tale?  Or could it just be that a hidden valley nestles somewhere in the midst of Russia?
