On This Day in Weird, July 14...
1881: Lawman Pat Garrett allegedly kills outlaw Henry
McCarty Jr., better known to history as William H. Bonney or "Billy the
Kid," at Fort Sumter, New Mexico, thus launching another historical
mystery. Stories persist that Garrett—a former friend of Billy—helped McCarty
fake his own death, or perhaps killed the wrong man (either accidentally or by
design). Decades later, several men
claimed to be the real Billy, living under different names into old age. Plans
for DNA comparison were foiled by lawsuits, and by politicians who cherish
Billy the Kid as one of their state's "cultural icons."
