Passenger Pigeon
The Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) was once found in both the United States and Canada in huge numbers. Unfortunately the Human Race thought that if a thing flies, you should shoot at it. A number of hunters in 1914 heard that the last flock of Passenger Pigeons was coming their way and thought it would be great fun to be famous for having destroyed the last flock. This they proceeded to do. They blasted away and the unfortunate birds fell like leaves in Vallombrosa. As a result, the Passenger Pigeon is now officially extinct.
However, there may be some survivors. Reports of the bird have come in from Michigan, New Jersey and Wisconsin. Perhaps....just perhaps.....the moronic act of destruction in 1914 did not rob the world of this beautiful bird. |
