On This Day in Weird, April 25...
1977: The Japanese trawler Zuiyō Maru, sailing east
of Christchurch, New Zealand, nets the decomposing remains a strange creature,
initially described as a sea serpent. DNA analysis later identifies it as a
basking shark, but some "young Earth" creationists still dispute that
finding, insisting that the animal was a relict plesiosaur, thus proving that
our planet is only six to ten thousand years old.
