On This Day in Weird, February 8...
1855: Hoof-like "devil's footprints" appeared in
snow overnight across Devon and Dorset, in England, spanning a distance of 40
to 100 miles by various reports. The prints measured four inches long by three
inches wide, separated by eight to sixteen inches and appearing to travel in
single file from Exmouth, up to Topsham, across the Exe Estuary to Dawlish and
Teignmouth. En route, they crossed over homes, haystacks, rivers and other
obstacles, appearing on roofs, leading up to and exiting from drain pipes as
narrow as four inches in diameter. Several sightings of a "devil-like
figure" were also reported, but armed hunting parties found nothing.
