At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

On This Day in Weird, February 4...

1895: Japanese fishermen net a 14-foot female giant squid in the Bay of Tateyama.

1940: Movie zombie-meister George Andrew Romero born in New York City.

1958: A 13-foot giant squid washes ashore at Ashiya, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.

1978: Manuel Alvarez sees a human-size entity in "luminous" garb descend a ladder from a hovering UFO at La Florida, San Luis, Argentina. It waves at fishermen, then reenters the craft, which departs at high speed.

1980: Ronald Smith watches Bigfoot cross an open field by moonlight, near South Weber, Utah.
