Cannock Chase seems to be the weirdest area in England, with a considerable number of cryptids and other strange phenomena reported from there.

On This Day in Weird, February 6...

1897: Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, future boss of "Murder Inc.," born in New York City.

1910: Future New Orleans Mafia boss and confessed JFK assassination conspirator Carlos Marcello born Calogero Minacori, in Tunis.

1933: Mariners log a 112-foot wave off the coast of Manila.

1960: An 11-foot giant squid weighing 246 pounds washes ashore at Arahama, Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

1974: Two witnesses report a Bigfoot sighting near Uniontown, Pa. The creature flees when they fire shots at it, but the witnesses glimpse others nearby, also reporting a UFO sighting.

BLUE DOG IN TEXAS

One of the blue dogs that have been reported from time to time has turned up recently in Texas.  These dogs are sometimes quite erroneously called chupacabras, even though that is a totally different animal.  Experts are now saying the blue dogs are due to crossbreeding.

(REALLY) STRANGE ANIMALS

Apart from Bigfoot, the Chupacabras and lake monsters, some pretty weird creatures have been reported from various parts of the United States.  Here is a list of some I've encountered.  By encountered I mean I've read about them - I haven't bumped into them personally.

The Awful

H.P. Lovecraft wrote about this.  He said it was one of the inspirations for his horror stories.  It was reported from Vermont in 1925 (two sightings).  It was a flying creature with ten foot wings.  One man who saw it on a roof had a heart attack.

Bogey of Craddock Marsh

On an island off the Virginia coast, this creature has been said to have lived for centuries.  However, the are no reports of anyone ever seeing it.  People claim to have heard its cries and footprints ascribed to it have been discovered.

Brainsucker

Now, here's a good one.  It is supposed to have wings 6' in length, a doglike face and a long body.  If you are traversing woods near Chester, Russell and North Adams, look out!  These are supposed to be its haunts.

Gray-Tentacled Creature

For a report of this, I have to go back to 1958.  Then it was seen crossing the road in Ohio and a second sighting reported its going into Kentucky.  One of its characteristics was said to be "rolls of fat".  It didn't have any hair.

Oyster Bay Cloud

In Oyster Bay, Long Island, this object was seen in 1975.  Although it looked just like a cloud, it was apparently alive and shot water at an onlooker.

SEAL OF CORK

There has been severe flooding in Cork, Ireland.  Yesterday, down the main street, a seal was seen swimming along tranquilly.

1572: Beggars storm Oisterwijk, Holland, driving nuns from the town.

1967: Witnesses observe several humanoid beings emerge from a three-legged UFO, placing small spheres around the grounded craft, in Millard, Ohio.

1994: On their third attempt, Mississippi prosecutors convict Klansman Byron De La Beckwith of killing civil rights leader Medgar Evers in June 1963.
