At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

PIEBALD SQUIRRELS

There suddenly seems to be an outburst of brown and white squirrels in the northern USA and Canada.  An early report came in from west of  Denver in 202  A report has even come from Alabama, which is somewhat far from the center of the reported sightings.  Jonathan Downes suggests the American red squirrel may be evolving a white winter coat.  Would such a thing be an advantage with global warming increasing so hideously?  Wild white red squirrels are occasionally reported in the UK.  A white (not albino) was photographed in Scotland in 2020.  I have just located a photograph of a white squirrel in San Diego in 2014.  If  white squirrels occasionally have always occurred, there is no reason why a piebald variety should not develop.
