The lake in question is now a reservoir. It is situated in California on the San Dieguito River. The lake Hodges Project commenced in 1916, though Indians warned that the lake was tenanted by a monster. Reports of a monster were circulating among whites by 1930, one claiming to have seen a lizard-like head. Atrap in the form of a cage containing a sea-lion as bait was constructed in 1932. The bait was apparently taken, but no monster was apprehended. An underwater photograph, when digitally enhanced, shows something that certainly looks like a monster. In 1956 the lake was poisoned to get rid of all the fish and then restocked. The poison may not have been strong enough for any monsters, for in 1966 a creature was spotted in the lake by picnickers. A photograph of a lump in the water was taken.
The monster has been nicknamed "Hodgee".
However, before you go looking for it with expensive equipment and diving gear, be warned that the whole story may come from a joke newspaper called As the Dam Drips and fictions uttered by reservoir keeper Morgan Tidwell.
The monster has its own website which you can access below.
