At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

WHAT IS AN ULAK?

It's an obscure cryptid, also written uluk, said to be found in Central America.  It is known in the traditions of the Indians of  Honduras and Nicaragua.  They consider it to be a monkey, but, as it lacks a tail, it is perhaps more probable that it should be classified as an ape.  It is black and about 5' tall.  It lives in caves in the mountains and is reputed to carry off women, but this assertion should be treated with caution.  Among the Rama Indians it is regarded as a form of sloth.  Sometimes they are regarded as gigantic.  In Sumu the term wulasha is used for them.  J.E. Roth seems to identify them with the sisimite, a creature of Guatemalan Indian folklore.  The latter is said to be the same as Bigfoot.  The Jicaque Indians call them chichinite.  Among the Sumo Indians they speak of a creature called the sirps, which may mean the same creature. Its feet are said to be pointed backwards, but this may be caused by its having a quadrupedal gait. Among tribal groups, it is only to be expected that some terminological confusion can obtain.
