On This Day in Weird, June 6...
1896: Farmer Carl Smithson claims he found a giant snake,
some 18 feet long, trying to swallow the leg of a Jersey calf in his barn, in
Champaign County, Illinois. Running for help, he returned to find the snake
gone. A posse formed to hunt the reptile, but no further reports describe their
success or failure. Critics dismiss this story as an example of 19th-century
"silly season" newspaper filler.
