At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

On This Day in Weird, June 27...

1970: At least eight witnesses, including João Aguiar of the Brazilian Federal Police, claim a UFO an extended UFO sighting from the Rio de Janeiro suburb of Leblon, beginning at 11:40 a.m. They describe a "great metallic disc" descending to rest on the surface of the South Atlantic Ocean, 500 yards offshore from the busy coastal highway Avenida Niemeyer, whereupon two small humanoids emerge and walk around the craft's rim, as if inspecting it. The "crewmen" wear helmets and "grayish aluminum-colored garments" resembling the garb of modern astronauts. After approximately half an hour, the UFO takes off, skimming the surface for 300 yards and raising the kind of wake normally seen from motorboats, before it soars skyward.
