At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

THE BEING IN THE GRAVEYARD

Linda Godfrey, in her excellent book Monsters of Wisconsin, records the experience of a startled woman who was mowing grass in a graveyard in Hawkins, near Eau Claire.  She saw another figure in the graveyard.  A tall figure with a large white head was staring at her.  Apart from the head, the rest of the body was black.  After about ten seconds it seemed to vanish.  She was to see this creature again.  From her driveway, looking through a window in her house, she saw the creature or a similar one inside.  It was sitting in a chair.  It stood up, but vanished after it had taken a few steps.

Many cryptozoologists are chary of such reports.  There is too much of the paranormal involved, they will say.  They want cryptozoology to be a "proper" science untainted by the paranormal.

However, they should remember that the paranormal is only the normal that hasn't been discovered.

It is my humble opinion that cryptozoology will never be recognized as a "proper" science, for, the moment a cryptid is discovered, it enters the mainstream science of zoology and is a cryptid no longer.  Who would consider the okapi a cryptid today, yet its discovery has not validated cryptozoology as a science, though a cryptid it once was.
