At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, June 15...

1608: While searching for a northern passage to the East Indies, Henry Hudson reports that two members of his crew have seen a mermaid. The log entry reads: "From the Navill upward, her backe and breasts were like a womans… her skin was very white; and long haire hanging down behinde, of colour blacke; in her going downe they saw her tayle, which was like the tayle of a Porposse, and speckled like a Macrell."

1857: On a rainy day in Ottawa, Illinois, a farmer named Bradley hears a hissing sound overhead and looks skyward to see an apparent shower of cinders falling. They land in a V-shaped formation, causing steam to rise from the ground while setting grass afire, while the cinders themselves sink into the soil like small blades. At the same time, Bradley sees a small dark cloud hanging over his garden.
