On This Day in Weird, April 9...
1731: British merchant captain Robert Jenkins loses an ear
when Spanish coast guardsmen board his ship. The ear is later displayed before
Parliament, belatedly launching the nine-year "War of Jenkins Ear"
(1739-1748).
1998: At least 118 pilgrims are trampled to death and 180
injured in a stampede on Jamarat Bridge in Mina, Saudi Arabia, during the Hajj.
