At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

MORE ON THE WUHNAN TOADS

We linked to a feature on the Wuhnan Toads some days ago and I thought I would take a look at D.C. Xu's excellent book Mystery Creatures of China (2018) to see what he had to say about these creatures.

The main lake they occupy is Changtan Plunge Pool and they have been recorded at least from the 19th Century.  They have batrachian heads and arms which end in hand-like forms with five digits apiece.  The hands seem to be covered, perhaps with down.  There have been a good number of sightings and encounters.  A witness of 1928 said the head of the animal he saw was 5' wide.  On a number of occasions complete or nearly complete creatures appeared.  A couple of times their arms and hands were seen reaching out of the water.  A 13' long specimen was seen in the 1980s.  In 1986 the animals' large round heads were seen sticking out of the water.

The latest sighting Dr Xu records was in 1990 when students threw dynamite into a gorge and a huge creature surfaced.  The great size of its eyes was remarked upon.  Authorities have since stopped this dynamite throwing.

This seems to be a cryptid with a lot of evidence to back it.  No doubt there will be further investigations.
