At the beginning of the 21st Century monsters still roam the remote, and sometimes not so remote, corners of our planet. It is our job to search for them. The Centre for Fortean Zoology [CFZ] is - we believe - the largest professional, scientific and full-time organisation in the world dedicated to cryptozoology - the study of unknown animals. Since 1992 the CFZ has carried out an unparalleled programme of research and investigation all over the world. Since 2009 we have been running the increasingly popular CFZ Blog Network, and although there has been an American branch of the CFZ for over ten years now, it is only now that it has a dedicated blog.

THE TARDIS AND I

Those who are familiar with the television series Doctor Who will know that he gads about in a device called the Tardis, which is within an old-fashioned telephone box.  Some time ago a survey of the science fictional devices within the program and the conclusion was that all were or would be feasible except for the fact that the inside of the Tardis was greater than the outside.  This, said a learned surveyor, was an absolute impossibility.

Although not a particular aficionado of the series, I felt that here was a challenge.  Surely I could show how it might be possible.  I had a Think and came up with the following conclusion.

The inside of the Tardis is roomy, replete with every kind of scientific instrument.  Certainly, it covers more ground and occupies more space than the outside.

But....

Suppose when you step into the Tardis, you enter a completely new dimension.  The interior of the Tardis is within the new dimension.  If you step out of the Tardis, you step back into the old dimension.  Wherever the telephone box travels in space or time, you would still enter the same new dimension when you stepped into it.  The new dimension inside would not be constrained by the old dimension outside, so it could contain all its paraphernalia.  It would not alter its size wherever the Tardis exterior, in the old dimension, ventured.
