1945: America drops the world's first nuclear weapon on
Hiroshima, Japan, hoping to hasten the end of World War II. After-effects
suffered by then-unborn victims who survived the blast with their mothers
include cancer, especially leukemia and lymphoma; small brain size and mental
retardation; blindness; spina bifida; and cleft palates.
