1979: Deranged Auschwitz doctor and fugitive war criminal
Josef Mengele allegedly suffers a stroke and drowns while swimming at the
coastal resort of Bertioga, Brazil. This is not the first report of Mengele's
demise, and Nazi hunter Simon Weisenthal remains convinced of his survival
until 1985, when forensic tests of the Bertioga remains confirm Mengele's
identity to "a high degree of probability."
