On This Day in Weird, September 6...
1994: American radio evangelist Harold Egbert Camping
predicts "the Rapture" will occur on this date. When nothing happens,
he pushes R-Day back to September 29, then to October 2 before giving up. He
subsequently resets the target date for May 2011, collecting money from
gullible believers to publicize his "revelation." When asked to
refund their cash in the wake of yet another flop, the aging fraud replies,
"We're not at the end. Why should we return it?"
