1777: French authorities arrest Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade, imprisoning him in the Château de Vincennes following his conviction in absentia for sodomy.

1924: Archaeologists open King Tutankhamun's tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Rumors of lethal curses ensue and inspire innumerable walking-mummy films.

1970: Indian authorities claim a man-eating tiger has claimed 48 victims within 50 miles of New Delhi.
