Did you ever see the old film Creature from the Black Lagoon which hit the screen in 1954? It dealt with a humanoid creature that frequented the Amazon and was covered in scales. It could breathe under water.
What many do not know is that it was based allegedly on a real belief of of the local inhabitants. This was revealed by a man named Gabriel Figueroa at a dinner party. The Indians in a certain village would know that a certain predator, a combination of man and fish, would issue from the waters of the Amazon once a year and carry off a young girl. Then, for another six months, the Indians would feel their daughters would be safe from the clutches of the ghastly creature. The manner in which Figueroa unfolded his account was not one of someone telling a tall tale, so who can tell what dwells beneath the Amazon's mysterious surface.
