White elephants are not really white - they can be pink, brown or gray, but not really white. Yet showman P.T. Barnum was able to display a truly white elephant. How had he managed this?

The answer he confided to an acquaintance/. He had had the elephant covered in whitewash or paint. This possibly was not good for the elephant, but Barnum got away with it.
