WHAT IS THE SHELLICAN?

Situated on Nelson Island (British Columbia) you will find West's Lake.  First Nations folklore maintains it harbors an unknown animal.  This has apparently been seen twice by John West.  He has described it as having a yellow-cheeked simian-type face and he also saw about 6' of the back.  Further information about this creature would be welcome.
