1871: Journalist Henry Morton Stanley leaves the U.S. for
Africa, seeking vanished explorer David Lingstone on behalf of his newspaper,
the New York Herald. The search concludes on November 10, when Stanley
locates Livingstone in Ujiji, near Lake Tanganyika in present-day Tanzania,
allegedly greeting him with the now-famous line, "Doctor Livingstone, I
presume?"
