1870: Oakland, California's Daily Transcript newspaper
reports that hunters Samuel de Groot and F. J. Hildreth have seen
"gorillas" along Orestimba Creek, a tributary of the San Joaquin
River draining eastern slopes of the Diablo Range in Stanislaus County, within
the San Joaquin Valley of California.
