In continental Europe it is believed that St Nicholas visits on the eve of St Nicholas' Day (December 5th). But in certain countries he has a companion - a ferocious looking creature called the Krampus who metes out punishment to bad children.
Above you can see this ferocious creature doing some meting. While the origin of the Krampus is uncertain, since the 17th Century he has been roaming about with St Nicholas. Goats' horns and cloven hooves are part of his description. He brings not gifts but coals.
