1978: 918 Americans die at Jonestown, Guyana, in a
mass-murder/suicide by the People's Temple, founded in 1955 by religious
psychotic Jim Jones. The Temple's former churches in Indianapolis and Los
Angeles remain in occasional use by members of other cults. Some 5,000 pages of
data collected by the House Foreign Affairs Committee remain classified today,
fueling rumors that the Temple was a CIA mind-control experiment gone awry.
