BEAST WITHOUT HEAD

I have recently been having a look at Brian Nunnelly's excellent book Mysterious Kentucky, which speaks of an extraordinary animal.  Two anglers were fishing at Dutchman Creek near Louisville at night time.  They heard an extremely noisy creature approaching them, the noise made by its progress, not by its utterances.  Then they saw it.  It looked like a spotted dog, but apparently it had no head.  They estimated its length at eight feet, its height at four.  It continued on its way, its progress indicated by disturbed rocks and these were disturbed in no silent fashion.

What are we to make of this?  Well, it obviously cannot be readily identified, but, as Nunnelly sensibly suggests, the apparent lack of a head may well have been due to visibility.  Remember, it was after nightfall.  It is strange it made so much noise - one tends to think of animals, other than bulls in china shops, doing their utmost to proceed silently.  This creature obviously feared no attack, nor was it trying to sneak up on prey.  It remains an isolated mystery.

By the way, if you haven't a copy of Nunnelly's book, make sure you get one.
