SQRAT

Various reports have come in of a creature called a sqrat, the hybrid of a squirrel and a rat.  The existence of such a hybrid seems very unlikely.  Reports have all appeared from North America.  Because of the lack of likelihood of such creatures, M. Dawson (Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh) has suggested that the creatures are possibly a quite distinct animal, a member of the Dyatomicidae.

Just to add a little to the confusion, the term sqrat is now sometimes being applied to black squirrels, which are simply melanistic variants of gray squirrels.  These are by no means uncommon in parts of the United States and Canada.
