GRENDEL

Grendel is the monster in the Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf which has attained a great deal of fame.  There has been much debate regarding whethre he is a wildman (Bigfoot type) or human gone feral.  Unfortunately, there is now reference in the poem to what exactly Grendel is.  It is said in the reign of Hrothgar, a semi-legendary Danish king.  Beowulf defeats the creature and subsequently his mother.

The question of whether the poem is based on an historical incident cannot be resolved.  If Beowulf lived, he flourished around the 5th/6th Century.  Hrothgar is also possibly historical.  If there is truth in the piece, it might indicate that Grendel was one of a species of humanoid that once throve in Europe.
