This rhyme is based, believe it or not, on a true story. Mary Sawyer, a 19th Century child in Massachusetts, raised a lamb abandoned by its mother and it followed her everywhere. One day, as she was going to school, the lamb pursued and caught up with her. Her brother Nat suggested they take it to school, which they did. They kept it hidden until the teacher's suspicions were aroused by a bleat. She took the lamb outside.
