HUGE BEAR IN ENGLAND

Bears became extinct in England in medieval times or earlier, so it was a surprise for centenarian  Edmund Anstey when, in 1844, the following encounter occurred in Somerset.

He was making his way home on horseback when a gigantic bear, surrounded by a circle of light, burst out, perhaps from a hedge or bank.  The bear, however, did the horseman no harm.  To judge from the circle of light, it may have been a preternatural bear.  Its sudden appearance may show it had broken through from another dimenbsion.
