WITCH FISH

This fish is supposed to dwell in Creve Coeur Lake in Illinois.  According to legend, the daughter of an Indian chief drowned herself here for love.  The chief prayed to the god of the lake to imprison her soul, as she had cherished a passion for a Spaniard, and the Spaniards were the enemies of the tribe.  This he did and she now lurks there as the witch fish, dragging faithless lovers into the water.

An unknown species in the lake may have given rise to the legend.  In 1967 strange creatures were reported in the lake.  They looked like alligators, but this is too far north for alligators to thrive.
