MERLION - SYMBOL OF SINGAPORE

The Merlion is not an actual legendary creature.  It is a fictional beast that serves as a symbol of Singapore, which is on an island and whose name means 'lion city'.  However, an Internet posting of 2003 suggested that the name should be applied to an unknown creature, perhaps a form of sea-lion, that was seen by a person called Yuan Chow.
