There is an interesting legend of a gigantic bear in the town of Angles in the department of Vendée, France. This huge creature is said to have caused some consternation when it appeared, not least because of its tendency to to devour cattle. The local priest, after praying for five days, placed aa chaplet around the beast's neck and it turned into a stone statue. The statue is there today.
Of course, there is always the possibility that the statue came first and the legend grew up afterwards to explain its origin.
