TREES AND MARRIAGE

This curious custom grabbed my attention.  In America in days gone by, when a couple married two trees were planted outside their house.  One was called the Husband Tree, the other the Wife Tree.  Where this custom originated I have yet to discover.  One wonders what happened to the trees if the couple was divorced, though divorces were probably a good deal scarcer back then.
