SPALDWICK PARASITE

Here's a little historical snippet.  In 1586 in Spaldwick, England, a strange and tentacled parasite was said to have entered a horse.  The result was fatal for the horse.  The parasite emerged from the horse and was killed by a man with a dagger.  What was it?
