ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, January 25...

1947: Notorious Prohibition-era gangster Alphonse "Scarface" Capone dies from the effects of tertiary syphilis at his lavish estate in Florida. Contrary to popular belief, Capone was not afraid of treatment when he contracted the disease in the early 1920s, but in fact was likely deceived by the normal disappearance of outward symptoms soon after infection. Historians now believe he passed the disease to his only son, who suffered lifelong health problems as a result.
